WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008

The first day of our three day adventure has been a huge success!!  We started off bright and early Wednesday morning, and arrived on cue at WBZ's television station.  The kids had a blast looking around at all the inner workings of the station, and Terry Eliasen and Barry Burbank answered all of our questions as they showed us around!!  TCS parent Patty Larken was also at BZ while we were there!!!  She was taping for the Liz Walker show set to air this Sunday morning at 11 AM!!!  What a small world!  After leaving 'BZ, we headed to The Parker House to drop off our luggage.  All of the fifth graders were quite impressed with the hotel!  Up next, a ride on the MTA and a visit to the Museum of Science.  Highlights included the lightning show as well as the WeatherWise exhibit where many of them can see themselves on a video shot by Mish Michaels at TCS when they were in the first grade!  Off to dinner at Bennigan's where everyone was thrilled with their dinner choice, and noone got up from the table hungry.  The highlight of the day was our trip to Blue Man Group.  Our very own Mrs. Winslow was called up on stage to share a snack of Twinkies and bananas with the three blue men!!!  The fifth graders thought this was a fantastic ending to our first day!!  Upon our return to the hotel, we found a very generous and delicious Boston Creme Pie had been left for us to enjoy as a bed time snack.  Please check out our pics on the links below, and feel free to email us with any questions or comments!

WOW! What an unbeliebable day we had today!  We started off at the Paul Revere house for our Man Behind the Myth program.  The kids did a great job using primary documents to research Paul Revere's life.  Lunch at Pizzeria Regina was a huge hit, and not one person got up from the table hungry.  Off to Charlestown and the Bunker Hill Monument-  Did you realize the the Battle of Bunker Hill actaully took place on Breed's Hill????  All sixteen fifth graders got their exercise at the monument as we all climbed up approximately 300 stairs and got quite a view of the city from the top!  After the monument, we headed back to the North End where we visited Copp's Hill Burying Ground, which just so happens to be the place where Robert Newman is burried.  Have you ever heard of him?  He assisted the Son's of Liberty on the night of April 18 in 1775 by hanging two lanterns in the belfry tower of the Old North Church.  Speaking of the Old North Church, we were scheduled at the same time as about 300 middle schoolers from NY.  I'm thrilled to point out that the TCS students behavior was far superior to theirs, and boy am I glad we do this trip with 16 as opposed to 300!  A brief stop at the Holocaust Memorial was a very powerful experience for the students.  You can see from our pictures that the memorial is made up of chimneys that have many of the numbers of people killed during the Holocaust inscribed inside them.  The Old State House came next.  We were able to learn all about the taxes throughout the Revolutionary time period along with some particulars about Crispus Attucks- the first man killed during the Boston Massacre.  Quincy Market was the chosen place for dinner- an even more popular choice for the fifth grade than Pizzeria Regina!  Everyone was able to choose whatever they wanted for dinner, and were the choices ever varied!  The Big Apple Circus was definitely the favorite activity of the day.  The finale was one of the most impressive shows I've ever seen!!  The fifth graders are having a wonderful time, and have been a pleasure to travel with.

We began our Friday with a trip to the Granary Burying Ground.  We found the graves of many famous Colonial people such as, Paul Revere, Crispus  Attucks, and Sam Adams.  From there, we headed to Faneuil Hall where Ranger Kim met us.  She always gives such a great overview of town and city government.  Nancy Holcomb met us at Faneuil Hall and we were off to the Old South Meeting House for our Tea Tax Debate.  All of the fifth graders did a phenomenal job throughout the debate. Each student was required to memorize two or three parts for the debate.  I am happy to report that ALL of the students did a phenomenal job of this, and Nancy Holcomb was quite impressed!!  After we finished, we headed to the Green Dragon Tavern where we had a fantastic lunch prior to our departure.  The trip was amazing, and the fifth graders did a fantastic job!!
