Activities for May 18
Learn about the parts of plants as you dissect one that you find in your yard. First make some labels that say roots, stem, leaves. This can be a writing exercise for your child as they copy or trace your words. Then go outside and dig up a plant. Be sure to dig deep so you get all the roots. Now use a safe knife or scissors to separate the parts and match them to the labels. Use a magnifier if you have one and carefully observe each part. Describe what you notice to each other. Dig up and dissect a different kind of plant and talk about what is the same or different.

Here is shape game you can draw or copy and play with real objects or pictures. After you make the grid with the shapes along the top search your house for objects that have each shape on then and bring them to lay on the grid. Add language to the clean up routine by giving hints about which one to put away next. “I’m thinking of something with a circle on the bottom that we drink from.”
