5th Annual TCS/Truro Public Library Mock Caldecott Award
For the fifth consecutive year, Truro Central School is teaming up with the Truro Public Library and the Provincetown Public Library to conduct a Mock Caldecott Award program. This year, Maggie Hanelt, Truro Public Library Youth Services Librarian, and Provincetown Library Trustee and Caldecott Committee alum Barbara Klipper selected 7 new titles for TCS students and community members to review.
According to the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) website, "The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." The first award was given in 1938.

Students begin the mock award selection process in late October by first learning about how the actual Caldecott Selection Committee members work together to select a winner. Barbara Klipper, Provincetown resident and former Caldecott Selection Committee Member, leads the students in this investigation. Throughout the next couple of months, each of the six nominated books is read and the illustrations analyzed by students during their Library Special with Ms. Roderick. Students consider the following categories, which mirror those in the actual Caldecott competition:
During our January field trip to the Public Library, students cast their vote for their favorite book's illustrations. The community is also invited to participate in the voting. Our winner is announced shortly thereafter and the actual Caldecott Award is announced in towards the end of January.
