Family Involvement Program
For the many years the CPC (Truro Central School preschool family group) has raised money to fund monthly programs for preschool families.  These programs have alternated between evening presentations by experts about parenting issues and afterschool activities for children and adults to do together.  Evening programs always include childcare and pizza in order to maximize access for all families.  A survey distributed to preschool and kindergarten families a few years ago indicated a strong interest in continuing these programs with a preference for after school activities for children and adults.  Therefore, the focus will be primarily on this type of program this year.  The goals and benefits of this program are as follows.
Evening Presentations of parenting topics:
  • Provide an opportunity for families to meet, network, and brainstorm
  • Introduce families to school and community resources (Lynne Newton, school psychologist; Nancy Winslow, school counselor; The Children’s Place; Stacy Klimkosky; media specialist; Kim Possee, art teacher; Mary Abt, music teacher)
  • Provide an opportunity for families to discuss general issues and interact informally with classroom teachers
After School Activities for Children and Adults:

  • Provide age appropriate, creative, hands on activities for children and adults to do together
  • Model appropriate language, instructional techniques, and behavior management methods for families
  • Expose families to preschool and kindergarten curriculum
  • Provide an opportunity for families to observe classroom teachers in action
In support of Truro Central School’s goal to increase coordination of its Early Childhood Program, improve communication between teachers and families, and improve the transition to kindergarten, the CPC  has invited Kindergarten families to Family Involvement Activities the past few years, with the financial support of the.  The kindergarten teacher has been an enthusiastic participant in these activities and many kindergarten families have taken advantage of this opportunity.
