Choking Requirements
MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements based on US Dept. Of Agriculture food safety recommendations regarding choking hazards for young children are as follows.
Not to be served in any size or shape:
-Hotdogs, sausages, or similar processed food items
-Grapes, cherries, melon balls
-Cherry or grape tomatoes
-Kiwi or kiwi berries
-Raspberries, blackberries, goji berries
-Dried fruit, such as raisins and craisins
-Popcorn
-Nuts and seeds; including peanuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds
-Nut butters
-Dried and semi-dried meat, poultry, and sea food (beef jerky, etc.)
Must be served in manageable bites no larger than a nickel:
Canned fruit
Raw vegetables
Potato or corn chips
Apples or other hard fruits
