Student Scientists in Action 2017-2018
Skittles and the Scientific Method
To begin the year, all TCS students practiced being scientists by thinking about the scientific method. We tested the effects of water on Skittles.

Ice Cream Matters!
5th graders had a unique assessment. Instead of a paper and pencil test to show what they learned about matter, they got to make ice cream in a bag. They made connections to knowledge on solids, liquids, and gasses; how matter can change; and properties of matter.

Pet Rocks
Kindergarteners can tell you why a pet rock is really easy to take care of....it's not living!

How does light affect the growth of peas?
Weather Instruments
Third graders have been thinking about how weather changes over time. We investigated some ways to measure different kinds of weather and decided that we could make wind instruments with some simple materials. We made and tested anemometers and wind vanes.

Made in the Shade!
First graders have been thinking about why the sun is important. We used lizards made of UV sensitive beads to show the effects of some of the sun's rays and why, although our sun helps plants grow, keeps us warm, and provides light, it can also harm us if we aren't careful. A great lesson for the upcoming summer season--we tried spraying sunscreen with SPF 50 on clear plastic. Although it did not keep our lizards completely white, it did a pretty good job. The secret is--the more shade, the more protection. Don't forget your hats, rash guards, and SUNSCREEN! Have a great summer and keep exploring!
