Second Grade News
Dear Families
January has been a busy and productive month in second grade. Here are some of the activities we have been working on.
In reading groups, Owls were our topic as we started the New Year. The class read both non-fiction and fiction texts on this topic. We researched owl facts and had the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet. During the second half of the month, we have been reading fables and have learned about the characteristic of a fable.
The big word in math this month is double digit addition and ballpark estimates! We are working hard and are making great progress. The school has subscribed to a terrific math site, IXL. The site has many very engaging activities to help hone math skills. Your child can access this from your home computer through the school website. Passwords and usernames went home earlier this month. Let me know if you would like to have that information sent home again.
Seasonal weather patterns and the water cycle have been our units of study in Science. Ask your child to sing you the “Water Cycle Song” or to tell you about the water cycle words: evaporation, condensation and precipitation!
Looking ahead to February, here are some of our up-coming topics:
Reading/Social Studies – Black History
Science – states of matter (liquids, solids and gas
Sincerely,
Laura Gazzano
Fables as Plays
Second graders have been learning about the different characteristics of fables in their reading groups. Our capstone activity was a showcase of plays and their morals: The Lion and The Mouse, The Ant and The Grasshopper, The Fox and the Stork and The Tortoise and The Hare.
