The Leadership Studio: Ms. Klimkosky
A Long Walk to Water
For an entire school day, the 6th graders carried a gallon jug of water where ever they went. This project brought awareness to the importance of clean drinking water as a tie in to their work in ELA on the book A Long Walk to Water. In Africa, 90% of collecting fresh water for families is done by women. On average, they spend about 6 hours a day making several trips to and from a fresh water source, while carrying heavy containers on their heads. The nearest source of fresh water is typically 10,000 steps, or 3.6 miles (6 km) away. Coincidentally, this is about the same amount of time as a school day and our steps equate to between 3 and 4 miles. In a small way, the experience brought what they read and talked about in language arts to life. Each student reflected on their experience in writing at the end of the day. |
Lollipop Moments
We thought about leadership in terms of little things that we can do. Leadership isn't always about doing big things...it's about being an "EVERYDAY LEADER". Drew Dudley showed us how in his TED Talk. This year, we will be thinking about LOLLIPOP MOMENTS & LEADERSHIP:
